Over the past 20 years, the population of Cornelius has swelled from 9,000 to just over 30,000, and it’s not hard to understand why people are moving here in droves. Cornelius is considered one of the best suburbs to live in North Carolina and is known for being active, chic, and social. 

Although Cornelius was founded in 1893, it was not officially incorporated until March 1905. This makes it the second-youngest of Mecklenburg County’s six incorporated towns. Since its humble days as a cotton weighing town, Cornelius has evolved into a successful community. 

A drive through Cornelius will reveal a variety of architectural styles, ranging from Colonial to Craftsman. Regardless of what style you prefer, the elegant homes with spacious yards are sure to impress.

Regardless of what you enjoy doing, Cornelius has plenty to keep you entertained. To spend a day in the sunshine, head over to Jetton Park. Located on Lake Norman, Jetton Park is spread over 104 acres. Here, you can enjoy a small beach, tennis courts, a trail, and a picnic area. The Peninsula Yacht Club offers facilities and programs to cater to your love of the water, as well as social opportunities to get to know others.

Cornelius is also known for its revolving calendar of year-round festivals. Hop Into Spring takes place annually in March or April at Robbins Park. Here, you and your family can participate in egg-themed activities, arts and crafts, face painting, and much more. Laketoberfest occurs in October and brings the community together over beer from local breweries throughout the state and live music. The Cornelius Jazz Festival, which takes place in May, brings together jazz enthusiasts from across the state—and even the country.
